Mid-Atlantic Trip Part II

First off – I need to update the readers on one item from Part I – the missing sippy cup. The day after I wrote that post, there was a package at our door from Pam. I figured that it had to be the cup, but it was too big to be just that. Well, the cup was in there, but there was also a really cool Civil War Boyd’s Bear! Union side of course – good call Pam. 😉 I think I’ll get enough to stage a few skirmishes.

Okay, so Saturday was the day of the family gathering and the reason for this whole trip. With Quincy getting up so early, we weren’t sure how the day was going to go. We knew he would need a nap, but wouldn’t have enough time to do that in Uniontown. So, we decided to leave early and let him nap in the car since it was about an hour trip to the gathering.

We had a good time with Dara’s family. Quincy did really well. All he wanted to do was walk/run around outside – and never toward other people – always off towards the road or the far side of the lawn. He kept us busy the whole time so it wasn’t particularly relaxing, but then again, whose family gatherings are? Quincy got to meet his great-grandmother as well. The gathering was sort of winding down by mid-afternoon – right near his nap time. The question then became: do we nap him here or drive to our next stop which is only 10 or so minutes away and let him nap there. I was in favor of the latter. If he napped at the gathering, then there was the potential of a very long nap and throwing off the whole schedule. We decided to head down the road to Kelly and Bryan’s.

Quincy did take a rather brief nap while Dara and Kelly looked through baby clothes (we are letting Kelly and Bryan borrow some of Quincy’s clothes for the adorable little boy, Thanh, whom they are adopting from Vietnam in the near future). After a delicious supper of homemade pizza, we all went on a walk together down the road to see some horses (the first Quincy has ever seen in person). However, Quincy was more interested in Kelly and Bryan’s dog, Zook, than in the horses. Of course, Zook is almost as big as a horse from Quincy’s perspective, since he is a lot bigger than Ashby. Quincy liked him, but also seemed to be a little afraid of his size. Most of the next day was spent at the home of Kelly’s sister, Jenny, and her husband, Don, for Don’s 40th birthday party. We had a nice time, and Quincy enjoyed playing with their toys since they have a little girl, Emma. We then had to be on the road back to New York state the next day.

On the way home, we had a little incident in Ruby Tuesday that Dara wanted to tell herself, so here it is:

We ordered Quincy his first kid’s meal – macaroni and cheese. He really liked it and actually ate a lot of it. Of course, by the time he got done eating, his hands were covered in slimy cheese, and he decided to rub it all over his face and hair. It looked like a pretty big mess, so I took him into the bathroom to clean him up. After I spent what seemed like forever getting most of the caked on cheese out of his hair and off his face, ears, and hands, I thought I was almost finished. Boy, was I wrong. That was only the beginning.

I knew I was in trouble when I laid him on the changing pad and saw that there was poop on the waistband of his pants and on his shoe. How did he get poop on his shoe? I soon realized that his onesie, pants, shoe and sock were soaked with his bodily functions and that I would need a whole new outfit. Of course, I had not anticipated the need for a change of clothes, so I had only brought a diaper and wipes into the bathroom with me. So I had to carry Quincy back out into the restaurant like that to find Steve and have him stand by the door to the Ladies room handing me plastic bags and clean clothes.

Just putting Quincy in the bathtub would have been a lot easier (and more fun for him) for cleaning up everything from the cheese in his hair to the stool everywhere, but, alas, we weren’t at home, so that wasn’t an option. I wiped Quincy down the best I could and got him into a clean diaper and clean clothes and handed him off to Steve. Then, I wiped down our changing pad and the changing station and then rinsed out his soiled clothes in the sink (why did there have to be a little grate in the drain??) and put them into a plastic bag for the trip home. By the time I was done in there, the bathroom trash in that Ruby Tuesday was pretty toxic, and I pity anyone who came into the bathroom after us. So, about 15 minutes and 100 wipes later, we were back on the road.

The rest of the trip, thankfully, was uneventful, and we got home safely. Thank you, Quincy, for keeps things interesting.
