This is just something I had to write down – I mean it was just so gross that it was nothing short of hilarious. If you don’t like “poop-talk” or anything like that, then you should not read any further. For the brave of heart (and stomach) read on….
Quincy has been eating solids for a little while now. We were told that he could become constipated if he didn’t get enough liquids. He did just fine with the rice cereal for a while. We added sweet pototoes to his diet about a week ago. He had been going to the bathroom as normal until about 3 days ago – then his septic system turned off. He was continuing to eat well and wasn’t showing any signs of discomfort at all. We weren’t concerned, but just curious about when things were going to get moving. I’m sure it is quite a change to his digestive tract having to deal with these new foods we’ve added. Today was Day Three of Poop Watch as I liked to call it.
Sometime earlier this AM I changed his diaper and there was just a small amount of stool in his diaper. Things were now moving again and I was glad to report that to Dara at lunch time when she called me. What didn’t really occur to me was this – what goes in has to come out. What he passed was nowhere near the amount of solid food he has eaten over the past 2 weeks. Unfortunately for me, I didn’t pay attention to that to that fact.
Quincy spent about an hour playing in his exer-saucer just having a great time when my mom called (Quincy sent her flowers for her birthday today). She told me that what he passed was probably just the beginning of things to come. I just laughed it off. I mean, c’mon, she’s not a fortune teller, right? Well, Quincy started acting tired and rubbing his eyes so I decided it was time for a nap. I was also sure there was something in his diaper as well as he had a funky odor emanating from his backside. As Isaac would say, “He smells familiar.” (inside joke there). I took him upstairs for the simple diaper change and nap. What awaited me was nothing short of a toxic spill that I should have called the EPA for cleanup advice.
As I slid his pants down over his Robies (shoes) I noticed a nice trail of stool coming with it. Did I mention these were flannel lined pants? Oh, that just makes things even more sticky. I just gasped in amazement at the amount of stool that this little guy had passed. Why do we use diapers at all? He might as well have been wearing nothing under his pants. I still am not sure where exactly the diaper failed – except almost everywhere. Quincy was covered down both legs and all over his groin area. The upside, yes I found one, was that the diaper prevented it from going up his back. My reaction? I laughed. I couldn’t help it. I mean, c’mon, this was just unbelieveable. What made things funnier was the fact that Quincy was not upset by any of this. He was giggling and smiling while I hosed him off. Okay, I didn’t use the hose, but I did use about 20 wipes.
This was a bad day to have him wearing a white onesie. It looked more like two-toned color after I got it off of him – no easy task there either. I go him all cleaned up and then redressed him and put him down for his nap. He seemed quite tired by all the excitement. I went off to the bathroom to rinse out his clothes and clean them up as best I could before even thinking about doing them in the washing machine. He shouldn’t have this happen again today because I put 4 diapers on him, plus a cork. Okay, I’m kidding, but it was an idea. 😉
So, that was my experience with Quincy’s first “adult” movement. I gotta say – I was impressed, not only with the shear volume, but also the way it just sticks to everything like glue. Luckily, we have the weekend coming up and Dara will be here. You can be sure I’ll be shying away from diaper duty until she gets one to clean up. Hmmm, maybe I’ll hide the wipes. 😀
Okay, all I could think of was the Robin Williams’ routine … “You may have been a lumberjack, you may have been a Marine, you may have seen blood and guts … but you’ve never seen ka-ka like this.”
No pictures of this memorable event to post??!! Welcome to a whole new world of parenthood! Jarron would go 5-12 days in between poops. The smell was worse than the clean-up!!
Believe me, I actually thought of photographing the incident, or at the very least, the diaper, but I had no easy way of getting my camera.
Oh Steve…this post was so funny I was crying! You should submit this to “Parents Magazine”! –Jeannine
