14 Months Old – October 15, 2006

Here are six candid shots from October 15, 2006 – his 14 month birthday.

Quincy is all spruced up in his sweater vest because it was our last Sunday at the church we have been attending for over four years. His rash on his face has good days and bad. We’ve taken whole milk out of his diet to see if it was an allergy to that that was causing the eczema. His face looks the best in the morning (hey, whose doesn’t?), but can start to get red as the day wears on.

So, Quincy will have logged just a hair over 14 months in the state of New York. It will soon be time to whisk him away to the land of New England, where the sky is a deeper blue, the trees have a nice greenish hue and there is no Hillary Clinton. Good luck, New York! You’ve been great!!

Apple Picking

As per our annual tradition while living in New York, we went up to Greece to go to our apple orchard. This was Quincy’s second time to this orchard, as you may recall. It proved to be great fun as he wanted to run all around the orchard, picking up the rottenest apples he could find (see front page of site for proof).

We met Ryan, Debbie, Isaac, and Nathan up in Greece for some lunch and then we all went on over to the orchard. We will miss going there, since we’ve done it every year since 1999. I did most of the picking and carrying of the bags so that Dara could chase down the little man. We picked mostly Cortland apples, but also got a small bag of Macs. All told, we picked 37 pounds of apples, but at just forty cents a pound you couldn’t go wrong. A lot of Cortlands were made into applesauce when my parents came up for a visit.

If you didn’t already see them, there are pictures of the apple picking. Besides a few stray raindrops, we had a very fun day up in Greece.

What’s Wrong With His Face?

As you may know, over the past month or so, Quincy has had a rash on his face. This was red and dry and was located around his mouth. We had mentioned it to the doctor who had told us it was related to irritation from drooling since Quincy is teething. The doctor said there was nothing more to do about it. However, over time it kept getting worse.

We were getting comments by strangers about the “kool-aid” around his mouth or people saying to Quincy, “you must have been eating something good!” Unfortunately, the bright red color around his mouth was not from what he was eating or drinking (by the way, who gives Kool-Aid to a one year old?), but was from his rash that was getting worse.

On our trip home to Maryland, his rash became more raised and crusty, and we were concerned about whether he might be developing a skin infection called impetigo. So, when we got back, we took him to the doctor again. He was diagnosed with eczema and impetigo. For the eczema (dry, inflamed skin), he was prescribed a steroid cream to use sparingly around the mouth. For the impetigo (a skin infection which happened because he had the eczema), he is still taking an oral antibiotic. You will all be happy to know that his face has all but cleared up. The only comments we are getting from strangers now are about how cute he is.

Mid-Atlantic Trip Part II

First off – I need to update the readers on one item from Part I – the missing sippy cup. The day after I wrote that post, there was a package at our door from Pam. I figured that it had to be the cup, but it was too big to be just that. Well, the cup was in there, but there was also a really cool Civil War Boyd’s Bear! Union side of course – good call Pam. 😉 I think I’ll get enough to stage a few skirmishes.

Okay, so Saturday was the day of the family gathering and the reason for this whole trip. With Quincy getting up so early, we weren’t sure how the day was going to go. We knew he would need a nap, but wouldn’t have enough time to do that in Uniontown. So, we decided to leave early and let him nap in the car since it was about an hour trip to the gathering.
