Golden Alley

There have been some advantages to living in “downtown” Belmont, New York. There are sidewalks. It has been nice to take Ashby for walks (keeps his nails short) and to be able to break out Quincy’s stroller. We have walked all the sidewalks in town already. We’ve gone to the end of the sidewalks in every direction out of town. I wanted to be able to take a long walk with Quincy and the dog in the mornings – so I did some exploring and I found a dead end road as you head south out of town. Here is a modified map of our hour-long walk:

You’ll notice that our path is in red and there are green dots all along the dead end road. What do they stand for? They represent where we were confronted by other people’s pets the other day.

At our first encounter was a black and white cat. It wasn’t a very smart cat because it kept coming closer and closer to Ashby. Before anything could happen there, I just pulled him away and kept on going.

The next 3 encounters were all Golden Retrievers. I had gone on this walk before with just Quincy several days ago and I knew that there were dogs on this street. We had encounters with these animals before, but their owners were out and nothing happened at all. This time was much different.

The first Golden, I call him the elder statesman Golden because he’s old, saw us from a long ways off. He came hobbling over to us. I parked Quincy and then stepped out in front of the stroller with Ashby by about 5 feet to protect Quincy should things go awry. Both dogs did the requisite sniffing and tail wagging with no growls or egos being bruised. I felt that the encounter went great – he let us pass. I should note since Ashby had been walking for a while already, he wasn’t his usual normal rambunctious self – and that most assuredly helped the situation.

Okay, the two green dots together on the map are two more Goldens that live at the same house. My previous encounter with them didn’t leave me feeling too good. During that encounter, a young girl, was trying to get one of them to back to the house and the dog was growling (at her I think). What is bad is that neither dog wears a collar or anything, so there is nothing to grab. On with the story…

So, I wasn’t really excited about another dog encounter and when I saw them from quite a ways away on the porch of their house, I did an about-face and headed back for safety. Too late. The one young Golden was making a dash for us so I readied for the assault. I parked Quincy facing away from the dog and moved up to intercept. I should point out that I’ve had a lot of animal handling experience working for the vets over the years, and I was ready to use deadly force on this animal should it attack me, Ashby or Quincy. It doesn’t take much to put a choke hold on a dog. Anyways, none of that would be necessary. The dog was very friendly and liked Ashby. The other Golden, a female, came sauntering up and also liked Ashby. Tails were wagging and a good time was had by all. I wondered if they would remember us when we came back down the hill and past their house again. They came to see us again, but it was much briefer this time. During these meetings, I never saw another human being – no owners to be found anywhere. I know this is in the sticks, but I mean, c’mon, your dog could get in a fight or run over or something.

The green dot nearest to the railroad tracks was where we met a nice Sheltie (who wouldn’t listern to her owner call her), but at least there was another person outside!

We ran into the cat again on the way back home and this time it got within about a foot of Ashby. I wouldn’t let them get any closer. You know hard it is to get cat hair out from between Ashby’s molars?

So, needless to say, we had a very eventful walk yesterday morning. We did not walk that way today. I will probably walk it some more since it is very pretty and good exercise. As long as Ashby stays mellow, then I think the other dogs will be just fine. If they get uppity, then I’ll shoot them with my handgun. Okay, so I don’t have a gun, but there’ll be trouble nonetheless!

Yikes

Wow, has it really been over a month between written posts? Well, we’ve been busy packing, moving, buying a house, selling a house, etc. Finally, things have started to settle down.

Quincy is doing great. He’s crawling like a maniac and pulls up on everything and everyone – even poor Ashby. Although it was funny to watch Quincy pull up on Ashby and then see Ashby take off while Quincy was still holding onto his fur. Quincy is doing some furniture surfing and can stand unassisted for a very long time. He will take steps if he is behind something that is moving or if you help him. I tend to think that his first true step will probably be an accident on his part.

He still has the 8 teeth – 4 up and 4 down. We suspect that one of his bottom pre-molars is coming in since he had been drooling a lot more than normal and Dara felt something in that area of his mouth. He is starting to bite less, but still comes at the dog with mouth wide open.

Quincy definitely has my internal thermometer. On Father’s Day we were at a picnic and Quincy did okay for a while, but then slowly had a meltdown, both physically and emotionally. It was VERY hot that day. We keep plenty of fans on in our new abode to keep the air moving – even if it is very hot air.

Quincy got to spend a lot of quality time with Gramma Dorcas recently. I had to drive up to Maine the end of May to close on our house up there and Dara had to work and Ashby hasn’t really shown that he is up to the task of taking care of the kid. So, Gramma came up and took care of things during my abscence and then during our relocation up to Belmont. Thanks Gramma!

We’ll be heading down to Maryland this weekend for my dad’s retirement from the ministry. Yours truly has been asked to speak during the occassion. Mwah-hah-ha-ha-ha. Be afraid – I’ve had 33 years to come up with this material. 🙂 Hopefully Quincy will handle the car ride okay. He’s becoming more agitated in the car as of late mainly because he wants to be moving around and getting into trouble.

Not much else has been happening on the Quincy front – just plugging away one day at a time. It is very hard to believe that he is almost a year old. Where does the time go? Soon he’ll be picking fights with me just like I did with my dad – ah – a time honored Rock family tradition.

Back in NY

Some of you knew this and some of you may not have known this: we were in New England from the 6th thru the 13th. The main purpose of the trip was to try and find a house up in Maine for when we move there in October. Well, we did find a house and have a contract on it. We’ve been making fast and furious phone calls since last week because the closing is scheduled for the middle of June.

June will be a very busy month for us. We are in the process of packing up our stuff so that we can be ready for the movers to move our stuff on June 9th to Belmont, NY. Shortly after that, we will be closing on our house in Wellsville and then closing on the house in Maine. We’re not sure how it will all settle out, but either Steve is going to Maine alone or neither of us are going up for that closing and we’ll do it via fax and FedEx.

Quincy did really well on the trip. We spent Monday and Tuesday looking at houses, but had already found the one we wanted by the end of the day Monday. Wednesday was Quincy’s worst day which, coincidentally, was the day we were trying to negociate the offer on the new house. So, that was a very stressful day since we had not planned on owning an unoccupied property in another state for four months before we move into it. We are very pleased with how everything is going and look forward to the move in the Fall.

There was a luncheon for us at BIMA (Bangor Internal Medical Associates) on Thursday. We got to see a lot of the people we had met back in October when Dara interviewed for the position. It was a nice visit, and Quincy got to be passed around a bit too. Now Quincy is home again and settling into his new routine. Some things have changed while we were away:

  • Quincy crawls like a pro
  • Quincy eats real, solid food (some types)
  • Quincy says ma-ma a lot
  • Quincy pulls up on everything
  • Quincy naps less often but longer

It’s like he became a totally different guy over night! It will be interesting watching him at home now due to the fact that we have tons of boxes and just stuff everywhere right now. I almost forgot that today is Quincy’s 9-month birthday as well. Wow. Where does the time go? He has a routine doctor’s appointment this coming Wednesday. I’m not sure what will take place there, but there are no shots at this visit. After this visit, there will be one more at 12 months and then we’ll need a new doctor for him up in Maine.

I think that wraps up the new stuff that has been going on. I will be sure to keep updates posted not only on Quincy, but on the moves/houses as well. Cherrio! (he loves those)
