An Ounce is How Much?

Back in the olden days, if you wanted to measure out an ounce of liquid, you simply used your glass liquid measuring cup. I mean, an ounce is an ounce is an ounce, right? Wrong. There’s the UK ounce, the US ounce and then there is the ounce we use in our house – the ‘I think it is an ounce, but I don’t know.’ Is it really that hard to accurately label containers that hold liquid? I did some basic experiments the other day and could not get ounces to be ounces.

We use Avent bottles for when Steve bottle feeds during the day. These nice bottles are labeled for every conceivable measuring standard – the UK ounce, the US ounce, and in case you are from the Continent – mL’s and cc’s. Wouldn’t you think that they would have double checked that they were right? To back up a little – Dara uses Lansinoh storage bags to put milk in for the freezer – those, too, have ounce lines. I mean, c’mon, that is truly not helpful. How can you really tell how much is in there? Anyways, I always thought she was way off measuring because the numbers didn’t add up correctly, but it turns out that the Avent bottles are not correct. I used a 1 ounce shot glass and came out a good bit off the more I filled the bottle up. No matter how I filled the Avent bottles with different ounce measures, I got a different result. So, to wrap up this inane story, I have no idea how much an ounce is – apparently nobody does. How much milk does Quincy drink? Well, he must drink more than 1 ounce but less than a quart at a time.

His weekly picture has been posted, just in case you checked earlier today and it wasn’t there.

Been a Long Time

I noticed that it has been quite some time from the last post. I shall do my best to bring you all up to speed.

Quincy is 15 weeks old today (no, the picture isn’t up yet) and is doing great. More and more of his personality is emerging, and we like what we see! All in all, he is a very easygoing, good natured fella. He does like his meals, though, so one can’t be too tardy with the milk.

We spent several days in Maryland over the Thanksgiving holiday. Quincy (and us) got to see his two cousins and their parents as well as his grandparents*. We weren’t sure how he would handle the trip, but he did very well and does not seem to have forgotten how to eat from the bottle.

My mom, Dara, and myself took him up to the Gettysburg Village to do some Christmas shopping the Saturday after Thanksgiving. I lobbied very hard to take him to the battlefield. I really wanted to get a picture of him sitting atop a cannon and one by the statue of Winfield Hancock (sorry Bill, no Sickles), but that idea was voted down by the female members of the shopping party.

We didn’t take a lot of pictures over the visit, but we did manage to get a few. I created a new page for them under the Photos section. For those of you who are impatient – click here – to warp over to those pictures. Otherwise, you can just access them from the Photos sections.

We’re back in the normal routine now, but that will be short lived, since Christmas is right around the corner. Yikes. We won’t be doing any traveling for that, but we will have people coming to our house. We plan on cutting down the tree in our front yard to use this year as our Christmas tree. I’ll be sure to send that picture along – it is something on next weekend’s agenda.

That about wraps it up from NY for the time being. We hope you all had a nice holiday and thanks for visiting the Playpen.

‘Official’ Birthday

Today is Quincy’s official 3 month birthday. He doesn’t have any special plans, really. I realize that the Quincy-age-ometer is off by a month. This happens at the end of a month I have found. I didn’t write the code for it, so I’m not sure how to fix it really. So, don’t panic out there – he really is only 3 months – not 4. 🙂

Things have been going well here at for Dara at work. Quincy has been chuggin’ along with the bottle, showing no signs of confusion or intolerance for it. We have a lot of fun playing during his awake times. He especially likes going for walks with me and Ashby, although he did fall asleep yesterday while outside. I’m teaching him to like the cold weather from a young age. 😉

Update on First Week

A few things – I uploaded 2 new Quicktime videos to the Movies section. For those of you with broadband access, it shouldn’t take too long to load them. If you have dial-up, then I recommend just going to the Movies page and then getting a drink or a sandwich while it downloads them. I’ve tried my best to shrink the size down, and I’ll see what I can do to further make it easier to view them.

Also, things at home have gotten better. Quincy is eating better from the bottle and Dara is finding ways to get all of her paperwork at work done. It has been a crazy few days, but I think that we’re slowly settling into some sort of routine. Thanks for everyone who has been thinking about us and praying for us these past few days.

If you still have trouble with the videos, please e-mail at srock@saurette.com and I will assist in any way that I can. Thanks!
